One of the most important reasons to communicate with your staff and your peers about what you are doing and where you are going is to bring about awareness that ensures you are all aligned. Whether meeting in one-on-ones, in a weekly staff meeting, or in coffee talk with peers in other departments it is important to SHARE what your thoughts and plans are to ensure that everybody is working towards the same goal through intelligent planning. When departments and employees are misaligned it leads to a couple of notable areas of waste:

Duplicate Work – How many times have you found out that someone else has been working on the same issue as you have? This is all too common in places where there isn’t efficient awareness and alignment of responsibilities because everyone can see the problems, and the go-getters look to get them addressed. By communicating with each other, you notice these areas as close to their inception as possible and don’t “double-up” on issues and duties.

Working Against Each Other – A little less common is when you find that someone else has been working in a way that cancels your work out. If you don’t communicate and align your efforts, you may find yourselves rowing your boat in opposite directions and getting nowhere. Be particularly aware of this between departments where there can be less understanding and less communication.

If you are able to build awareness and align your efforts you can create a team environment that leverages different skills. This is where the time you spend communicating and creating awareness pays off and you recoup that time through process efficiencies and a better result.

Align your employees and your departments continually by communicating as much as possible about what you are working on and where you are going. This ensures you are eliminating wasted effort and not wasting experience and ability.
