"Success is less a function of grandiose predictions than it is a result of being able to respond rapidly to changes as they occur." ~Jack Welch
"Effective leaders help others to understand the necessity of change and to accept a common vision of the desired outcome." ~John Kotter
Almost any leader can maintain the status quo. They need only say “keep doing what you’re doing” to every team member. Most of what we do as leaders is about change. Improving a team member’s performance is change. Revising schedules to match demand is change. Bringing on a new product is change. We may call our duties many different things, but almost all of them amount to a desire to bring about positive change.
So regardless of what personality traits, skills and background you are looking for in your next group of leaders, one of the primary things you need to look for is how they deal with change. If they deal with change well now, they are well on their way to being able to do it in a leadership position. A few things to look at specifically:
- Do they see the positive in change?
- Are they looking for a challenge?
- Do they help others accept the change?
If you answer “yes” to the above, I assure you that they will learn whatever skills you need, they will be open to working on the personality traits of a leader, and they will gain experience. If they can’t change or manage change well, then no personality trait, skill, or experience is going to make them effective.
And make no mistake, this goes for you as well. Do you enjoy change? Are you up for the challenge? Do you help others accept change? I trust that you do, so embrace it, don’t fight it. Change is what leadership is all about.
